A new transport link within cities(11/10/2011)
Self-service bicycle schemes in France and abroad have brought new life to city centres.
Cyclocity’s self-service bicycle scheme has strengthened the links between the different local stakeholders. The system is particularly suitable for short distances, allowing users to move quickly about the city and encouraging them to shop locally.
In 2007, when Vélib' was launched, 15% of users replaced their car journeys with self-service bicycle trips (Sources: Bilan des déplacements 2007 – Paris Transport Observatory).
With the VéloCité system in Besançon, 42% of customers reduced their car travel. 250,000 kms have been covered by bicycle, avoiding 52 tons of carbon monoxide (source: Lettre d’Information VéloCité No. 2 - January 2009 edition - www.besancon.fr).
This new mode of travel fits seamlessly into the urban landscape, and has created many employment opportunities.
